• Having a clear vision of how various strategies can affect the overall success of the company 
• Maintaining a manageable and well-organised product backlog 

In addition, the most successful BI Product Owners are constantly designing and implementing market-changing solutions for the business as a whole. 

Personal qualities that a BI Product Owner needs 

Business Intelligence Product Owners each have their own individual identities, of course, but in almost all cases they are strong leaders and have a powerful sense of business acumen. They are adept at assessing the needs of the team, and by seeing the bigger picture they know how each member’s contributions – as well as their own – are impacting on the overall product lifecycle. 

Team leadership is important, but so is the ability to empathise with the needs of every single member of that team. There is also a need to work closely where necessary with suppliers, third party vendors, members of the senior management team and departmental heads within the organisation. An element of coaching and mentoring is also going to be required from time to time. 

Qualifications needed to be a BI Product Owner 

Most recruiters look for a strong academic background, preferably with an IT-related bachelor’s degree, and potentially several years of experience working with scrum in general and product ownership. 

Knowledge of data management and visualisation and the associated tools is usually a prerequisite with experience of some of the following being key:
